The Nova Scotia Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) has charged an Ontario man with sexual offences. HTU received a report in February that a man forced a woman into the sex trade in 2016. Officers learned the incidents occurred in Nova Scotia over a two-month period and the man now lives in Kingston, Ont., according to a news release from the Nova Scotia RCMP. HTU officers travelled to Kingston on June 22 and arrested 28-year-old Cory Patrick Mackey. Mackey has been charged with: Mackey appeared in Halifax provincial court and was released on conditions. His next appearance is scheduled for July 23. The investigation is ongoing and is being assisted by Kingston Police. “Our unit, which is made up of officers with specialized training in human trafficking and sexual violence, is here to support victims of human trafficking,” said Sgt. Jeff MacFarlane in the release. “If you’ve experienced human trafficking or know someone who may be a victim, please contact us through our hotline. We will offer support first and foremost.” The Nova Scotia Human Trafficking Hotline, 902-449-2424, is monitored by a police officer 24/7 and callers can choose to leave their information anonymously.
