A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection to an attempted child abduction in Surrey over the weekend, according to local police. Liam Robert Dobbs-Morency has been charged with one count of abduction of a person under 14 years old and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon, the Surrey Police Service said in a news release Wednesday. The charges stem from an incident that was reported on Saturday, June 13. Shortly before 6:40 p.m. that evening, SPS front-line officers were called to the 8100 block of 136A Street, where a stranger had allegedly approached a child who was outside playing in a driveway and “physically picked up” the child. “Bystanders saw the incident and intervened, causing the stranger to put the child down and leave the area,” the release reads. “A man matching the description of the suspect was detained by bystanders a short distance away until police arrived and took him into custody. The child was not physically injured in the incident.” The SPS Major Crime Section is leading the investigation, which is ongoing. Police said Dobbs-Morency made his first appearance in court the day after his arrest and was remanded in custody. His next appearance is scheduled for Thursday, police said.
