Some of the best pranks from April Fools’ Day in Saskatchewan

Organizations and businesses across Saskatchewan took part in pranks and furthering harmless falsehoods in the spirit of April Fools’ Day.

Whales in Lake Diefenbaker

Lake Diefenbaker Tourism shared quite the update Wednesday morning, announcing that the lake had been selected as the site for Canada’s first-ever “Freshwater Whale Conservation Program.”

The post to social media claimed that researchers determined the lake’s depth water quality and cool prairie temperatures made it ideal for whale rehabilitation.

The organization reminded visitors to “keep a respectful distance,” and to “not attempt to feed the whales.”

The Saskatchewan Anthem Act

Darcy Warrington, the NDP MLA for Saskatoon Stonebridge announced over social media Wednesday that he would be putting forward a private member’s bill proposing a “Saskatchewan Anthem.”

“We have so much to be proud of in this province and what better way to summarize and show our support than to sing about its greatness,” Warrington wrote in the post, which featured the MLA playing a trumpet.

The Caper of Mac the Moose

Tourism Moose Jaw sent out a heartfelt message early Wednesday morning, claiming the city’s famous 34-foot-tall statue, dubbed “Mac the Moose,” was stolen.

In the announcement, the city asked residents to help track him down, describing the local icon as “extremely large, very friendly and impossible to fit in your pocket.”

Listed suspects were anyone with “a very large truck.”

Seniors-Only Zipline

The City of Warman was quite inventive with its April 1st hoax, announcing the immediate approval of a “Seniors-Only Zipline.”

“The Seniors-Only Zip Line will be made of galvanized steel aircraft cable which will be suspended 20 metres above the ground and will provide roughly 19 kilometres of zip line for seniors to travel on and enjoy all over Warman,” the joke announcement read.

According to Coun. Marshall Seed, the zip line was not the only option for senior transportation – with hot air balloons and cannons also being given serious consideration.

Snow Bins

The City of Yorkton had its fun by announcing a brand-new waste collection program – for snow.

A mock poster was shared by the city Wednesday. Rolling out “May 1”, according to the announcement, the aptly coloured white bin will be exclusively used for snow removal.

Unfiltered Lakes

Regina artwork studio Sticks & Doodles issued an apology to residents Wednesday – vowing to create accurate versions of its wooden southern lake maps.

“For years we’ve been making our southern lake maps with blue water. Blue. Have you seen our lakes?” the social media post read.

To rectify the grave error, the business introduced “The Unfiltered Collection” which display Saskatchewan lakes in the only colour they’ve ever been – algae green.
