With high heat and humidity comes an increased chance of thunderstorms. Environment Canada issued yellow severe thunderstorm warnings for much of Simcoe Muskoka Wednesday afternoon as the multi-day extreme heat event continues. “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” said the weather agency in its advisory. Environment Canada added that the conditions could bring ping pong ball sized hail, heavy rain exceeding 40 millimetres, and wind gusting up to 100 kilometres per hour. “Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury,” continued the weather agency. “Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.” The severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for most areas between Barrie, Wasaga Beach and Huntsville from Wednesday afternoon through the evening. Widespread heat warnings remain in effect across Simcoe Muskoka and throughout eastern Canada.
