New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt marked Canada Day at several local celebrations on Wednesday, speaking about the province`s role in national unity at a precarious time. “In 1867 New Brunswick was there at the founding of our country, because we saw that our country and our possibilities would be better when the four of us at the time came together to build something big,” said Holt, at Canada Day celebrations in Quispamsis. The four provinces which established the Dominion of Canada were Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. “New Brunswick will be there to fight for a united and strong Canada, forever,” said Holt, who also made appearances at Canada Day celebrations in Rothesay, Hampton, and Fredericton. Holt didn’t make specific reference to an upcoming vote in Alberta pondering the idea of separating from Canada, nor U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing rhetoric about Canada being the “51st state.” “New Brunswick wants to see a strong, united Canada doing big things in the world,” said Holt. “We live in the best country in the world and today is a day to celebrate that.” For more New Brunswick news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
