Canadian Armed Forces training with weapons, helicopters around Renfrew, Pontiac this week

Residents in parts of Renfrew County and the Pontiac might see and hear increased military activity this week as part of training exercises.

The Department of National Defence (DND) says personnel from the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command will be conducting routine training from May 21 to 26 in eastern Ontario and western Quebec.

Training will take place from May 21 to 22 in the vicinity of Petawawa and the Pembroke and Area Airport, from May 23 to 24 near Portage-du-Fort, Que., and the Cheneaux Dam, and from May 25 to 26 in the Sheenboro, Que., area, which will include travel on the Ottawa River.

DND says residents might notice increased military vehicle traffic, including helicopters, low-flying drones, and armed personnel. People might also hear explosions and the sound of blanks being fired at night.

“Efforts will be made to minimize disruptions to the public and precautions will be taken to maintain public safety when required,” DND said in a news release.
