Unique community art project brings awareness to deafblindness

A local library is highlighting deafblindness through a unique community art project.

The front entranceways to a couple of the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library’s branches have a splash of colour, thanks to a yarn bombing installation.

For National DeafBlind Awareness Month, the Lakeshore and Stroud branches of the library are displaying hand-knit or crocheted squares.

The Lakeshore branch has the squares sewn together and wrapped around the pillars at the library’s entrance while the Stroud branch has them hung on the fences at its front entrance.

The Simcoe Region team at DeafBlind Ontario Services and community members created the yarn squares as part of a global yarn bombing initiative.

It’s all in hopes to build awareness about deafblindness around the world.

Deafblindness is a combination of impairment to both vision and hearing, making it difficult for people who have it to communicate, be mobile and access information.
