OPP look to ID unknown suspects after rural break-in

Ontario Provincial Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying two suspects captured on surveillance video during a break-in at a rural property in Papineau-Cameron Township, east of Mattawa.

OPP said officers were called to a property on Papineau Road shortly before 10 p.m. on June 20 after the property owner reported seeing two individuals on the premises through a home security system.

“Police attended the location and observed that entry into an outbuilding had been gained by cutting a lock, believed to have been done using bolt cutters,” the OPP said in a news release.

A subsequent search of the area, including nearby trail systems, did not locate the suspects.

Surveillance footage captures suspects, conversation

Video recorded at about 9:50 p.m. shows two people dressed in dark hooded sweatshirts and wearing balaclavas, with backpacks slung over their shoulders. One of the individuals appears to have been carrying bolt cutters at the time.

The footage also captured audio of the pair inside one of the outbuildings. A suspect can be heard saying: “Big honking batteries right here, man. I’m taking those two big batteries over here.”

The second suspect then calls out: “Oh, buddy. Buddy, come look at this. Hey, hey.”

The first suspect responds with a single word: “Shotgun.”

The OPP video or news release make no mention of a firearm being stolen, and police have not confirmed whether any weapon was taken. However, social media posts circulating following the public release of the surveillance material indicate that expensive batteries were among the items removed from the property.

Police appeal

Investigators have released still images and the video clips in the hope that members of the public will recognize the suspects’ builds, movements or clothing.

“Can you identify these suspects?” the OPP asked in a social-media appeal posted alongside the surveillance material.

Both individuals are described as wearing dark-coloured sweatshirts with hoods and face coverings. They were each carrying backpacks at the time of the incident.
