Manitoba weather: Chance of thunderstorms

After a hot start to the month of July, be prepared for even hotter, humid conditions in southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Thursday and Friday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has continued heat warnings for both regions Thursday.

The weather agency said a hot and humid air mass will move into southern Manitoba on Thursday, with the most humid conditions expected by Friday.

That means hot highs in the low 30s Thursday with humidex values that will feel anywhere from 35 to 40 by late afternoon. Hit the repeat button for Friday.

Between the two days, showers or thunderstorms are possible overnight Thursday into Friday, primarily in the southeast, including Winnipeg.

This will be a short-lived blast of extreme heat. A cold front is set to cross the province on Friday night that will bring cooler air behind it, relatively speaking, by Saturday.

Expect a not-so-sunny weekend in Winnipeg and surrounding regions, with temperatures in the mid-20s.

Elsewhere, ECCC issued a severe thunderstorm watch Thursday afternoon for northwestern Manitoba. Thunderstorms could develop in the region that will have the potential to become severe, courtesy of a low pressure system over Saskatchewan.

The weather agency said the thunderstorm threat will lessen Thursday evening.

The same regions and Tadoule Lake further east are also under an air quality alert due to wildfire smoke, issued by ECCC.
