Measles case detected in Montreal

Montreal public health is warning of a person who visited several locations in and about the city, “while contagious” with the measles.

People who visited the following locations may have been exposed to the virus:

Measles is a highly contagious disease, more so than the flu or COVID-19, that spreads through small droplets of respiratory secretions that can remain suspended in the air.

Symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and general malaise.

“If you are protected against measles, you are unlikely to contract the disease,” public health explains. “It is still important to monitor for the onset of measles symptoms until the date indicated.”

Am I protected?

In Quebec, people are protected if they were born:

• After 1980, and have had two vaccine doses (starting at 12 months old)
• Between 1970 and 1979, and have one vaccine dose (two for health care workers)
• Before 1970, and have not been vaccinated.

Additionally, any person who has already had the measles, with proof (medical certificate or blood test), is considered protected.

If you are not protected and have symptoms of the disease, public health recommends:

• Staying home until 14 days (inclusive) post contact;
• Calling Info Santé at 811;
• Avoiding contact with unvaccinated people (such as babies under a year old) and people with weakened immune systems.

If you need to go to a clinic or hospital, wear a mask and alert them in advance.

Upon arrival, immediately tell a staff member that you may have the measles.
