The City of Winnipeg cleaned up close to 60 encampment sites on public property since new rules came into force. Late last year, the city passed a policy banning encampments near schools, daycares, playgrounds, and transit shelters. According to a progress report, action was taken at 20 public properties over the span of four months. This included dispatching an outreach worker, installing no camping signs, and offering housing to those in the encampments. The report said 58 sites were remediated once they were vacated and that bylaw officers and emergency workers completed 199 inspections. The report also noted that the enforcement required more than 3,100 hours of work at a cost of $256,227. The full report is available online.
