A Calgary man has been charged as part of a lengthy investigation into two sexual assaults in the Beltline. The first assault happened between 1 and 2 a.m. on July 23, 2023. Police say the victim was walking when she was approached by a man who offered her money in exchange for sex. “She declined, after which the man sexually assaulted her,” police said in a Tuesday news release. “The suspect then ran away.” Police say though officers viewed CCTV footage from the area, they were unable to identify the suspect. “However, they did seize biological evidence, which was ultimately used to create a DNA profile,” police said. The second sexual assault happened a year-and-half later, on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. Police say the victim was sleeping outside in the 1200 block of 17 Avenue S.W., when a man offered her money in exchange for sex. “After she refused, the man sexually assaulted her, then fled the area,” police said. The victim called 911 and was taken to hospital, where police say biological evidence was collected. “DNA analysis is a methodical and lengthy process,” police said. “While that work continued in the laboratory, officers continued their investigation on the street.” “After viewing CCTV footage from the area of the second assault, and gathering other evidence found on the scene, police identified a suspect.” Police used a warrant to get a DNA sample from that suspect. On April 14, laboratory results came back that linked the suspect with both sexual assaults, police said. The suspect was arrested the following day. Gramey Weldeselsa, 37, of Calgary, is charged with two counts of sexual assault. He is scheduled to appear in court in May. Police believe there may be other victims and are encouraging anyone with any information to contact them at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers. In Canada, there is no time limit on reporting a sexual assault.
