A new rental housing development is coming to Barrie, offering an affordable option for Barrie residents. Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall with JD Development Group, a real estate developer in Markham, made the announcement Tuesday morning. The purpose-built development will be a 12-storey building with a total of 231 rental units, 46 of which will be dedicated to affordable housing. The new build will be in the north end of the city at 52 Lakeside Terrace. “Affordable housing starts with building more homes,” says Nuttall. “This project delivers new rental supply and real options for residents, and that is exactly the kind of progress Barrie needs.” The 46 units will only be available to Barrie residents who have been approved. People outside the city are not eligible. The City says as Barrie sees continued growth, these rental developments are important in making sure residents have secure and stable long-term housing. “This project is about delivering the housing residents need and doing it the right way,” says Julia Zhang, CEO of JD Development Group. “We are proud to help bring more rental housing to Barrie and support the city’s continued growth.” The City says the development marks progress towards expanding Barrie’s housing supply. This housing announcement comes roughly seven months after Nuttall declared a state of emergency to address homelessness encampments across the city.
