137 excessive speeders caught during Burnaby crackdown, including parents driving with kids

A crackdown on excessive speeding in Burnaby, B.C., last month resulted in 137 drivers being pulled off the road – including some parents who were travelling with young children.

In a news release, Burnaby RCMP said officers targeted high-risk driving behaviour at locations across the city, including around schools and playgrounds, with some “staggering results.”

During one stop, a mother driving with a toddler was clocked going 105 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, authorities said. In another, a father driving with his wife and their five-year-old was caught going 97 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

“When a driver gets behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is their responsibility to know the speed limit in the area they are travelling,” said Sgt. Gary Johal, with Burnaby RCMP’s Traffic Services, in a statement.

“The number of drivers our officers stopped this past month, who chose to speed well over the limit, is confounding.”

Other drivers were caught speeding while impaired, including one who was nabbed going 136 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

The 137 drivers pulled over throughout May for excessive speeding – meaning they were travelling at least 40 km/h over the limit – each received a ticket and had their vehicle impounded for a minimum of seven days, the RCMP said.

“The hope is that this serves as a reminder that speeding not only comes with a financial impact, but real-life ramification,” said Johal.

Normally, Burnaby sees an average of around 100 excessive speeding incidents per year, according to the RCMP.
