What’s playing this weekend: June 5-7

We're checking out this week's new movies in theatres and at home with Mr. Hollywood, Matt Demers, including a new He-Man movie!

Rain is in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, so it could be the perfect weekend to duck inside for a movie at the theatres. If you’re wondering what’s playing on the big screen, film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, has you covered.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to speak about three new movies you can see in theatres this weekend: “Masters of the Universe,” “Scary Movie” and “Power Ballad.”

Masters of the Universe (Rated PG-13)

He-Man is back in this new film that Mr. Hollywood calls a “colourful blast of nostalgic action.”

“It’s delivering just the right amount of camp,” Demers said.

“They don’t take it too, too seriously, but they do when it needs to be. But I had a great time with the cast, with the action. This was a surprise favourite of mine this summer — big blockbuster.”

“Masters of the Universe” stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and Idris Elba. The film was directed by Travis Knight.

Scary Movie (Rated R)

The long-running horror movie-spoof series is also making a return to the big screen, with its first entry since 2013.

Demers says the film is exactly “as advertised.”

“Crude, relentless, they’re going to go there, and just like the other movies, they throw so much at the wall. It’s fast,” he said. “Not everything is going to hit, but I think if you’re a fan of that franchise, you will have a good time with Scary Movie.”

The film stars Anna Faris, Jon Abrahams and Regina Hall. It was directed by Michael Tiddes.

Power Ballad (Rated R)

Paul Rudd stars opposite Nick Jonas in this music-centre dramedy.

“Someone may have taken a song and used it to get big on the charts, and Paul Rudd is out for, I don’t want to say revenge, but he’s out to prove himself,” Demers said.

“It’s a mellow, drama, comedy, you’ll laugh and you’ll feel but its all about the music and I like what it had to say about the music industry as a whole.”

“Power Ballad” stars Rudd, Jonas and Peter McDonald. It was directed by Jon Carney.
