Former Ottawa deputy police chief Uday Jaswal, who was accused of sexually assaulting a female colleague in 2011, pleaded guilty Monday to a lesser charge of breach of trust. According to the agreed statement of facts, Jaswal, who was an acting inspector at the time, and a female officer of a lower rank met at his office while on duty, consumed alcohol and engaged in sexual activity. The female officer reported the incident to Ottawa Police, and Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit charged Jaswal with sexual assault in 2024. Jaswal maintains the sexual activity was consensual. On Monday, a judge approved Jaswal’s plea to the charge of breach of trust. He was given a six-month conditional sentence and will not serve jail time, provided he abides by his conditions. Jaswal was suspended with pay in 2020 and collected more than half a million dollars in salary until he resigned from the force in 2022. “My actions in this case reflected a lapse of judgment in 2011 and for that I have accepted responsibility,” Jaswal said in a statement. “I have learned from this experience, and I will do better in the future.”
