A 65-year-old man already in custody following a jail escape last month has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a Christmas Day death in Thunder Bay last year. The Thunder Bay Police Service announced the charge in a news release Friday, more than seven months after the sudden death was reported on Dec. 25, 2025. Christmas Day discovery Police said officers responded to a 911 call regarding a sudden death on Regent Street just before 1 p.m. Christmas Day. “On scene officers located a deceased man,” police said. The Major Crime Unit took over the investigation, which remains open – with no new details made public before now. Arrest and charges Police said that investigators arrested a suspect at the Thunder Bay Jail on July 30. Anthony Frizzell of Thunder Bay has been charged with second-degree murder. He remains in custody with a future court date. The arrest came five days after Frizzell was captured following an escape from the Thunder Bay correctional centre. Police had issued a public warning on July 24 after receiving a report of the escape, advising drivers in the city’s south end and along the Highway 61 corridor not to pick up hitchhikers. “If observed, please do not approach and call 911,” police said in the July release announcing Frizzell’s escape. Officers located and apprehended Frizzell around 1:30 a.m. on July 25, about nine-and-a-half hours after the escape was reported to the public. Ontario Provincial Police assisted with that investigation. Authorities have not disclosed where Frizzell was captured, when he escaped or how he left the correctional facility. Second suspect Thunder Bay police said another individual was arrested on July 8 and faces an accessory after the fact to murder charge. “The unnamed accused’s charges have not been read in court as they have been released under an undertaking with a future court date,” police said. Ongoing probe Police said the death investigation remains ongoing. “No further information is available at this time,” said police.
