Ottawa just experienced the rainiest July in its history, and August seems set for another wet start with Environment Canada issuing a special weather statement for heavy rain and possible thunderstorms on the long weekend. Environment Canada issued the special weather statement on Saturday shortly after 3 p.m., advising residents that rainfall totals could exceed 50 millimetres on Sunday. “Showers and thunderstorms will repeatedly move through the region on Sunday. Localized heavy rainfall is possible for areas that receive multiple thunderstorms,” the statement said. “Rainfall warnings may be issued. Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times.” Rainfall warning outside Ottawa Environment Canada has issued yellow-level rainfall warnings across parts of eastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. According to the warning, between 50 and 80 millimetres of heavy rain is expected on Sunday, though the total rainfall could reach 100 millimetres. The warning is in effect for communities like Pembroke, Petawawa, Pontiac and more. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times,” Environment Canada says. “Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.” Ottawa forecast According to Environment Canada, Ottawa residents should expect showers throughout the long weekend. The forecaster says there is a 40 per cent chance of showers in Ottawa throughout Saturday. There is also a risk of thunderstorms. The temperature will reach a high of 28 C and the overnight low is expected to be 18 C. On Sunday, expect showers and a risk of thunderstorms with a temperature high of 23 C. On Monday, the temperature will reach 26 C and there is a chance of showers during the day. Tuesday is expected to be sunny and warm with a high of 27 C.
