A pair of London, Ont. athletes are bringing home silver medals from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Julia Tunks finished second in discus, while Damian Warner brought home silver in the decathlon. Tunks came close to winning gold in the women’s discus throw but ultimately settled for silver. Her throw of 60.67 metres was surpassed only by Jamaica’s Samantha Hall (61.66 metres), while India’s Seema Kaliramna (58.65 metres) claimed bronze. “We secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games,” Tunks said on Instagram. “I just like to thank everybody who was at the stadium and back home, watching and supporting. It means the world to me, and I’m really glad to be following in my dad’s footsteps as he secured a bronze medal his first (Commonwealth) games, so I guess I’m a step ahead. Anyways, thank you guys so much, and it was a great experience.” Meanwhile at Scotstoun Stadium, Warner finished second in the men’s decathlon after two-time defending Commonwealth champion Lindon Victor pulled away in the final two events to claim his third straight title. “I had some solid events to start this decathlon,” the 36-year-old Warner said. “But there were some very poor performances and it just kind of went downhill from there.” The 2020 Olympic champion from of London, Ont., trailed Victor heading into the javelin, where the Grenadian recorded a meet-best throw of 63.06 metres to extend his lead. A season-best throw of 55.54 metres kept Warner in contention heading into the concluding 1,500 metres. Victor finished 11th in that race with a time four minutes 51.78 seconds to secure gold with 8,096 points. Warner crossed sixth in 4:37.50 to finish with 8,036, while India’s Tejaswin Shankar claimed bronze with 7,976. “I’m proud that I was able to come out for each and every individual event and kind of just reset and put my best performance together,” Warner said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough.” Brooke Overholt of St. Marys, Ont. finished 7th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.10.
