Tesla driver swerved into oncoming traffic, causing four-vehicle crash: Sudbury police

Police in Greater Sudbury are redirecting traffic after a serious multi-vehicle crash closed Elm Street between Big Nickel Mine Road and the Lasalle Extension.

An early evening crash involving four vehicles March 11 on MR35 in Sudbury began when a Tesla driver lost control of their vehicle and swerved into the other lane.

Greater Sudbury said the collisions took place around 4:20 p.m. on MR35/Elm Street between the Lasalle Extension and Big Nickel Road.

“Based on the initial investigation, it is believed that a black Tesla sedan was traveling eastbound towards downtown when the driver lost control, crossing the centre line into oncoming traffic,” police said in a news release March 12.

Serious injuries

“The vehicle struck a Green Hyundai SUV head-on, causing the two vehicles to collide with a black Honda CRV and a black Honda Pilot.”

The driver of the Honda CRV was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Tesla was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the Hyundai sustained minor injuries.

The driver and two passengers of the Honda Pilot sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and anyone who witnessed the collision or who was driving in the area at the time whose vehicle is equipped with a dash camera is asked to contact the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit at 705-675-9171, ext. 2421.
