Dr. Duke Redbird, a member and an Elder of the Saugeen First Nation, was appointed to the Order of Canada as an Officer (O.C.) on Friday. Governor General Louise Arbour appointed 56 Canadians, and wrote this of Redbird, “Duke Redbird … has been a defining voice in Indigenous arts and thought for more than 60 years. Through poetry, visual art and spoken word, he highlights the enduring bond between people and the land, and has influenced creators, educators and communities across Canada and beyond.” Redbird has served as Indigenous Arts Consultant to the Toronto District School Board since 2014, and is currently both an Elder and Artist in Residence at the Urban Indigenous Education Centre. “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Redbird in an online statement. “I accept it not only on my own behalf, but in recognition of the Elders, Knowledge Keepers, educators, artists, and communities who have guided and inspired me throughout my journey.” He continued, “My life’s work has been dedicated to building understanding through education, culture, and the sharing of Indigenous ways of knowing. I remain committed to supporting future generations as they carry this work forward.” Presented by the governor general, the Order of Canada recognizes, “outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.”
