Swerving motor home leads to impaired charges on Manitoulin Island

A 60-year-old man from Innisfil, Ont., is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving, after Ontario Provincial Police stopped a swerving motor home on Manitoulin Island earlier this month.

The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. on Sept. 1, on Highway 540 in Billings Township when officers were patrolling the area.

“They observed a motor home swerving and driving on the shoulder,” OPP said in a news release Wedneday.

“A traffic stop was initiated to conduct a sobriety check.”

As a result of stop and the subsequent investigation, the driver, a 60-years-old man from Innisfil, was charged with impaired driving, driving with liquor readily available and driving without a licence along with failing to have his insurance and failing to provide a required document.

In addition to the charges, under provincial law, the motorist was also issued a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and the motor home was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Gore Bay on Oct. 9 to answer to the charges.

Authorities remind the public of the dangers of impaired driving

In the release, the OPP included a standard reminder to motorists about the dangers of impaired driving.

“The OPP wants to remind the public that no amount of alcohol or drugs in your system is safe while driving,” said the provincial police service. “If you suspect an impaired driver on our roads, waterways or trails, don’t hesitate to ‘Make the call’ and dial 911. Your phone call could save someone’s life.”
