Rain, freezing rain, heavy snow warnings in effect in the northeast

A mixed bag of spring and winter weather warnings are in effect across northeastern Ontario, with heavy rain or heavy snow expected depending on which area you live.

Rain and freezing rain warnings are in effect in Greater Sudbury, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, Environment Canada said Thursday morning.

Up to 50 mm of rain could fall beginning Thursday evening and ending Friday morning.

“The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall,” Environment Canada said in its yellow-coded weather warning.

“The heaviest rain is expected to fall tonight, with locally higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.”

Freezing rain up to 3 mm could fall Thursday afternoon, before it switches to rain.

“A Colorado low will bring freezing rain to the area,” Environment Canada said.

“Freezing rain is expected to change over to rain tonight as temperatures rise above the zero-degree mark.”

Snow in Timmins

In areas in and around Timmins, meanwhile, a winter storm is expected with snowfall amounts between 10 and 20 cm.

“Peak snowfall rates of two to three cm per hour,” the warning said.

“Reduced visibility in heavy snow and local blowing snow.”

Snow will begin Thursday afternoon and end Friday afternoon. Freezing rain amounts between three and five mm are also expected.

“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate,” Environment Canada said.

“Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Road closures are possible. Local utility outages are likely.”
