OPP warn of copper wire thefts in Wellington County

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are urging residents to report suspicious activity after a copper wire theft was reported in Wellington County.

Officers were called to Lake Road in Puslinch Township shortly after 6 p.m.

Police said a male on an e-bike was seen removing approximately 25 metres of telecommunications wire from the road. He left the area before officers arrived.

“Theft and damage to telecommunication lines are more than just property crimes, they can have serious public safety consequences,” OPP warned in a media release. “These lines support critical services like 911 emergency access, medical alert systems, and internet and phone connectivity. When they’re compromised, entire communities can lose access to emergency help and essential communication, putting lives at risk and disrupting daily life.”

Police said copper wire is frequently targeted due to its value at scrap yards.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity near telecommunications infrastructure is asked to contact their local policing agency.
