Extended care registration opens for students in Waterloo Region

CTV’s Spencer Turcotte takes a look at the new system that will be used to register children for before and after school care in Waterloo Region.

Waterloo Region’s new extended care registration tool officially launched for both the public and Catholic school boards on Monday morning.

Mekanys replaces the troubled OneList system.

Over the last two years, parents reported problems while trying to sign up their children for before and after school care. Those issues included website errors and mistaken acceptance emails. One parent described the experience as “The Hunger Games.”

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) announced the move to Mekanys in early March.

“The changes are inspired by parent feedback,” WCDSB spokesperson Lema Salaymeh told CTV News at the time. “Our goal is always to ensure that parents have a seamless registration process that is supportive and consistent and reliable. That is at the heart of all the changes that we’re making.”

Registration for the 2026-27 school year opened Monday at 8:30 a.m.
