Residents seek cooling options as northern Ontario faces first heatwave

With temperatures holding steady in the high 20s, residents across Sudbury have been finding creative ways to beat the heat during the first major heatwave of the season.

From splash pads to sandy beaches, the city’s cooling spots have seen heavy traffic as people look for relief from the sweltering conditions.

Turning to water, shade for relief

For many Sudburians, the answer to the heat has been simple: find water and stay hydrated. Alysha Leblanc, participating in the Focus on Abilities Program, brought her group to the Delki Dozzi Splash Pad as part of their strategy to stay cool.

“Today we went to the splash pad to cool off,” Leblanc said.

“We always like to drink a little bit of water to stay cool in the heat. So always remember to drink a little bit of water.”

Nearby at Bell Park’s main beach, Jenny Moutsatsos was taking a different approach to managing the high temperatures.

“(I’m) going for a swim in Lake Ramsey. Nice and cold water,” she said.

“Then staying in the shade, wearing a hat and drinking a lot of water.”

While some residents were planning to reach for ice cream as a cooling treat, public health officials suggest there may be healthier alternatives for those looking to beat the heat.

Adam Ranger with Public Health Sudbury and Districts acknowledged that while frozen treats are a popular choice, hydration remains the most effective approach.

“It’s a fun way,” Ranger said of the ice cream.

“Obviously, hydration is the best and there are other cool treats that might be some healthy options. You know, homemade popsicles and freezes, etc. But also, fruits and things like that. Just anything really to get hydration, especially with water, is obviously the best.”

Ranger added it is still good to allow your body to cool in any safe way you can.

Vulnerable Populations at Increased Risk

With Environment Canada predicting the higher temperatures will persist until Thursday, there is growing concern for Sudbury’s most vulnerable residents. The city has activated its Hot Weather Response Plan to address the needs of those without adequate shelter or access to cooling.

The City of Greater Sudbury has established a dedicated drop-in centre at Energy Court to provide relief for people experiencing homelessness during the extreme heat.

“The city is operating a drop-in centre at Energy Court, open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.,” the city said in an emailed statement.

“This offers a safe, air-conditioned space where people experiencing homelessness can cool down, rest and stay protected during extreme heat.”

The Go-Give Project has been instrumental in providing on-the-ground support to those most at risk during the heatwave.

“We’re seeing an average of about 150 people a day in the past two weeks,” said Ali Farooq, the organization’s co-founder and programs manager.

“We’re offering water. We’re offering electrolytes, and we’re offering a cool space to cool off for people and pets. And yeah, those are our main and outreach fan is distributing water bottles in the community as well on a regular basis.”

Public health officials are also emphasizing the importance of community awareness and checking on neighbours who may be vulnerable during the heat.

“Be aware of the intense heat that we’re experiencing and to ensure that you are staying hydrated, you know, using sunblock to protect yourself from sunburn and hats, sunglasses, etc., but also to be mindful of your neighbours,” Ranger said.

Cooling options expanded

In response to the prolonged heat warning, the city has expanded its cooling resources for residents. Municipal staff confirmed that all seven public beaches remain open and the 17 splash pads will be available until 9 p.m. on Monday.

The city indicated that if the heat warning continues, additional measures could be implemented to provide further relief. Lifeguard hours may be extended at public beaches, and libraries and Service Centres may see their hours extended to serve as cooling centres for the public.

As the heatwave continues through the week, residents are encouraged to take advantage of these public resources and remain vigilant about their health and the well-being of those around them.
