Environment Canada says a severe thunderstorm is on the move. Storm season is not letting up in Manitoba as multiple weather advisories and warnings have been issued in Manitoba on Monday. Winnipeg, Selkirk, Brandon and Portage la Prairie are among the communities currently under an orange severe thunderstorm watch, issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. “A developing low pressure system and frontal wave will mix with an unstable atmosphere this afternoon over southern Manitoba, creating conditions favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms,” the advisory from ECCC reads. “These severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall. “A tornado or two can also not be ruled out.” According to the City of Brandon’s Facebook page Monday evening, the city said “a significant amount of rain” has come down in a short period of time and crews are monitoring the situation. “Residents are asked to use caution when travelling and avoid driving through areas with standing water or overland flooding. Even shallow water can be deeper than it appears and may conceal hazards,” the post reads. Large hail, heavy rain and strong wind gusts are also possible. Finally, an orange rainfall warning was issued for western Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan. Dauphin, Roblin, Russell and Minnedosa are currently under the warning. “Total rainfall of anywhere from 35 to 90 mm can be expected before the rain tapers off on Tuesday,” ECCC said, adding highly localized rainfall in excess of 150 mm is possible with this current storm system, and localized flooding is possible.
