Mikkelson, Coffey among 2026 inductees into Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame

A two-time Olympic gold-medal winner from St. Albert and a legendary National Hockey League blueliner are heading into the province’s hockey hall of fame this year along with several others with ties to the Edmonton area.

Meaghan Mikkelson and Paul Coffey are among the nine individuals and two teams being honoured after they were named the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 on Wednesday.

Seven of them, including Mikkelson and Coffey – both who played defence – are either from or plied their rink-bound trade in Edmonton.

Meaghan Mikkelson

Mikkelson won gold for Canada at WInter Games in 2010 and 2014 as well as silver in 2018.

The 41-year-old, who was born in Regina and grew up in St. Albert, is a broadcaster, providing colour commentary on Calgary Flames radio broadcasts along with work on sports networks in both Canada and the U.S.

She starred for the Wisconsin Badgers women’s team in U.S. college hockey, and played professionally for the Edmonton Chimos and Calgary Inferno.

Paul Coffey

Coffey is another former player and coach heading into the Alberta hall. The defenceman out of Weston, Ont., won three of his four career Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers over his 21-year NHL career.

He sits second in all-time NHL scoring by a defenceman after Raymond Bourque and holds the record for most goals by a defenceman (48) in one season, achieved in 1985-86 with Edmonton, and has scored more than 100 points in a single NHL campaign five times. Coffey also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins.

The 64-year-old recently served as an assistant coach with the Oilers for two seasons, stepping down after the team’s 2025 Stanley Cup Finals run.

Bruce MacGregor

Edmonton native MacGregor joins the hall after a long career in the game.

The 84-year-old captained the junior Edmonton Oil Kings before turning pro with the Detroit Red Wings in 1961. He would play 13 years in the NHL, 11 with the Red Wings and two with the New York Rangers, before returning home to Edmonton to play the final two years of his pro career with the Oilers of the World Hockey Association.

Following his playing career, he served in the Oilers’ front office as their assistant general manager, winning five Stanley Cups along the way.

Thomas (Swede) Knox, Randy Mitton

The late Knox and his longtime NHL linesman partner, Mitton, will enter the hall in July.

Knox, an Edmonton native, and Mitton were a tandem who worked NHL games in western Canada for the better part of 20 years, starting when the Oilers and Winnipeg Jets joined the NHL from the WHA in 1979. Knox was based in Edmonton, Mitton in Calgary.

Knox retired in 2000 after a 28-year career in which he officiated in 2,248 NHL games, Mitton in 2004 after 22 years and 2,265 games. Knox died of lung cancer five years ago.

Mike and Randy Moller

The Moller brothers enter the Alberta hall after each enjoyed NHL careers, with the Red Deer-born Randy going on to his current career as a colour commentator for the Florida Panthers, the team with which he wrapped up his 14-year NHL career in 1995.

The 62-year-old also played for the Rangers, Buffalo Sabres and Quebec Nordiques, the team that drafted him 11th overall in 1981.

The Calgary-born Mike, 63, scored the gold-winning goal for Canada at the 1982 world junior hockey championships and played pro throughout the 1980s, first in the Sabres organization then the Oilers.

Other 2026 inductees include former 1989 Cup-winning Flames forward Colin Patterson, the 2011–12 and 2012–13 U18 Red Deer Midget AAA Optimist Chiefs that won national titles, and Calgary’s Perry Cavanagh, who will receive the Robert Clark Legacy Award for leadership.

The hockey hall will hold this year’s induction gala on July 18 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.
