Driver in custody after van hits daycare west of Edmonton

A man is in custody after the van he was driving hit a daycare west of Edmonton on Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to Young Champions Daycare on 48 Street in Stony Plain, Alta., at 10:55 a.m.

The Stony Plain Fire Department was called to conduct an emergency rescue operation involving one person, according to the Town of Stony Plain.

RCMP say the driver of the van was taken into custody but is currently undergoing a medical examination.

A daycare employee was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The building had been evacuated by the time emergency crews arrived and all the children were accounted for, according to RCMP.

Police were working with daycare staff to reunite children with their parents as of 12:15 p.m.

The building remained evacuated because of a gas leak.

Stony Plain is about 40 kilometres west of Edmonton.
