Lethbridge and area school safety patrollers rewarded with Hurricanes skate

Alberta Motor Association school safety patrollers in and around Lethbridge took to the ice for their annual skate with the local junior ice hockey squad, the Hurricanes.

Alberta Motor Association (AMA) school safety patrollers in and around Lethbridge received a special reward Thursday.

The kids took to the ice for their annual skate with the local junior ice hockey squad, the Hurricanes.

Fifth and sixth graders from all over the region were bused to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

There, they got to skate with the Hurricanes and police officers as a “thank you” for their efforts.

“It’s always good to connect with kids whenever you can kind of show them appreciation for their support,” said Owen Berge with the Hurricanes.

“Obviously, they’re a big part of our fan base, and it’s always good to kind of chill. We appreciate them any way we can.”

The kids also had the chance to learn about brain health and how to stay safe playing sports.

“It’s great for us to be out here to show our high school safety patrollers the job they do on the crosswalk is important, and it brings together our community partners, such as the Hurricanes,” said Allison Purcell with AMA School Safety Patrol.

Four hundred schools across the province are involved in the safety patroller program.

More than 12,000 volunteers in grades 5 and 6 take part.
