Separate vehicle recalls warn ‘airbag inflators could be defective,’ and engines may not have been built properly

In two separate recalls issued by different manufacturers, more than 17,000 vehicles are being recalled in Canada for possibly defective airbag inflators and engine problems.

General Motors is recalling more than 200 vehicles, saying the side curtain airbag inflators could suddenly deploy, posing a risk of injury.

“On certain trucks, the side curtain airbag inflators could be defective. As a result, the driver and/or passenger side curtain airbag inflator(s) could deploy without a crash,” the notice says.

“If this happens, parts could be propelled toward vehicle occupants.”

The affected models are the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado HD, the GMC Sierra 2018 and the GMC Sierra HD 2019.

General Motors said it will advise owners by mail to take their truck to a dealership to replace both side curtain airbag modules.

‘Engine may not have been manufactured properly’

Toyota is recalling nearly 17,000 vehicles because the engines may not have been manufactured correctly. As a result, the vehicles could stall while being driven, increasing the risk of injury for those inside.

“As a result, metal debris could cause the crankshaft bearings to fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough or may not start,” the notice says.

The affected models are vehicles equipped with a 3.4L twin-turbo engine. The models are the 2024 Lexus GX 550, the 2023 and 2024 Lexus LX 600, and the 2023 and 2024 Toyota Tundra.

The manufacturer said it’s still working on a plan for the fix, but that it will contact owners by mail.
