The first time Nova Scotian gymnast Ellie Black competed in the Commonwealth Games, she did it in Glasgow, Scotland in 2014. This month she returned to the city and scored a gold medal. “It was a full circle moment,” Black told CTV News Atlantic’s Todd Battis. “It’s another amazing memory.” Black, 30, took home gold at the women’s all-around final on Sunday. She also scored the top title at the 2018 games. With this latest victory, Black is now the first person to finish at the top of the podium for all-around gymnastics twice at the Commonwealth Games. “Someone mentioned to me that it was an historic feat and I had no idea,” Black said. “That was really special. I didn’t know I was the first gymnast to win two Commonwealth all-around titles.” Black, who was appointed to the Order of Canada earlier this year, said she was excited to share the Commonwealth Games with her teammates. Fellow Canadian gymnast Lia-Monica Fontaine, 16, scored bronze in the all-around finals. “This whole team was fantastic,” Black said. “They are such incredible teammates. “It’s really inspiring for me to work with them because it renews the energy. I hopefully want to inspire them. They inspire me.” Black said she’s now focused on the 2026 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in the Netherlands this October. She’s also gearing up for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. “You have to be mindful and smart with training,” she said. “I’ve got a great team that’s supporting me and we’ve got a great plan as we work to the LA Olympics. “It doesn’t matter where you come from.
