A convicted sex offender with a lengthy criminal record is wanted once again by Montreal police (SPVM) for being unlawfully at large. According to the SPVM, Mario Charette, 65, was in the Montreal area when he allegedly breached his conditions imposed by Correctional Service Canada. Court records show that Charette was on probation at the time of the alleged breach. He was charged with sexually assaulting three people in June 2023 in Rivière-Rouge, a city about 180 kilometres northwest of Montreal in the Laurentians. He pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two of the three victims, who were aged 74 and 29, and was acquitted in relation to the alleged victim. On Nov. 20, 2025, he was sentenced to two years, but after being credited for spending 377 days in pre-trial custody, the sentence was reduced to 164 days, followed by one year of probation. He was previously sought by Montreal police in June 2023 for being unlawfully at large and was later arrested by provincial police in Mont-Laurier, Que. The SPVM’s Sex Offender Monitoring Team (ESDS) is now searching for Charette and is asking for the public’s help. On Wednesday, Montreal police say he might be in Quebec or elsewhere in Canada. He is described as a white man who speaks French. He is five feet four inches tall, weighs about 196 pounds, with grey hair, blue eyes, wears prescription eyeglasses, and might have a grey mustache and beard. He also has scars on his right cheek and near his left eye. Charette also has several tattoos: the words “Karine,” accompanied by a cross, and “Mario” on his right arm; a ship’s anchor and two hearts with a dagger on his right forearm; the word “Linda” and a panther on his left arm; and a tattoo of a bird on his chest. Police say when he was last seen he was wearing a black cap with the word “Energy” on the right-hand side, a black long-sleeved shirt, and pants.
