Police say a 78-year-old woman is in stable but critical condition after she was allegedly assaulted outside a transit station in Surrey, B.C. Officers responded to a report of an assault outside Surrey Central Station shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from Metro Vancouver Transit Police. Investigators allege that a man aggressively shoulder-checked the woman from behind. “The woman was violently knocked to the ground during the alleged assault, hitting her head on a concrete wall and the pavement,” according to the release. “The suspect then left the scene.” The woman suffered serious head injuries and was transported to hospital by paramedics, where she remained Thursday. A suspect was identified and arrested later that evening. Police say Evan Michael Scott Abbott has been charged with aggravated assault and remains in police custody awaiting a bail hearing. In the release, transit authorities thanked two witnesses who reportedly saw the incident and called 911 while remaining at the scene to assist the victim and provide statements to police. “We appreciate the time they took to help a stranger and assist with the investigation,” Const. Sunny Kainth said.
