A 27-year-old man from Sutton, Que., has been charged after police investigated a series of bush fires this week in the northern Ontario community of Huron Shores. The local fire department responded July 28 “to multiple reports of suspicious fires along Melwel Road, west of the Town of Iron Bridge,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release July 29. Police and fire responded to 10 small bush fires around 5:30 p.m. “that had been deliberately set on both the east and west sides of Melwel Road.” “The fires were located at varying distances from the roadway, ranging from approximately 10 feet to 700 feet into the bush,” police said. “While investigating the fires, members of the Huron Shores Fire Department observed an individual on Melwel Road between Clubhouse Road and Dunn Farm Road.” The suspect was found on a nearby trail around 7:15 p.m. and taken into custody. Charges include arson causing damage to property and obstructing police. He was scheduled to appear in bail court in the Ontario Court Justice Bail Court in Blind River on July 28.
