A roll-off bin truck left the road in New Westminster, B.C., on Monday afternoon, partially closing a historically dangerous intersection for several hours. The truck was travelling down Holmes Street and failed to stop at East Columbia Street, continuing off the road and down into an embankment, the New Westminster Police Department said in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon. East Columbia Street was closed for several hours, as crews worked to remove the truck from the embankment. Police said the driver was hospitalized with minor injuries, adding that investigators are working to determine why the driver failed to stop. “Officers will be taking all possible factors into consideration when determining the cause of the collision, including both speed and possible impairment,” a spokesperson for the NWPD said in a statement to CTV News. Trucking route controversy The intersection of Holmes and East Columbia has been a point of contention in the past, as two similar crashes involving dump trucks happened in the same intersection in less than a week in May 2024. No one suffered any serious injuries in either collision, police said at the time, but the incidents raised questions about the safety of using these roads as a trucking route.
