The city is asking walkers, runners and cyclists to use caution travelling along a stretch of the Sturgeon Creek Greenway Trail. A sinkhole has developed just off a pathway along the St. James active transportation route in an area south of Ness Avenue near Amarynth Crescent Park. “We are aware of and actively looking for a solution to the erosion,” a city spokesperson said in an email to CTV News. “It is a complex issue involving the creek bank and not just a normal pavement failure.” The spokesperson said the issue began in 2023, and the city installed concrete erosion control matting the following year to help combat high water levels. “This worked well through 2025, but the heavy rain and high waters earlier this summer led to a new area of erosion,” the spokesperson explained. “The eroded area is now barricaded, and we are continuing work to determine best next steps towards a long-term solution. “ On Friday afternoon, the affected area was cordoned off by orange fencing and a sign warned trail users to stay on the pathway.
