As of Friday, the speed limit on Highway 400 is increasing by 10 kilometres per hour. Between Hwy. 401 in Toronto and Lake Joseph Road in Muskoka Lakes, drivers can now drive at 110 km/h, as opposed to just 100 km/h. The speed change was announced by the provincial government in June. According to the province, similar increases were made on parts of the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in 2022 and parts of the 401 and 403 in 2024. In June, the province said the speed change on other highways were “successful,” which influenced the decision to make more speed changes. The province claims most of Ontario’s freeway network was originally designed to “safely accommodate” a posted speed of 110 km/h. Similar speed changes are going into effect Friday for Hwy. 7 from Appleton Side Road (County Road 170 to Hwy. 417), Hwy. 115 from Hwy. 35 to Parkway Interchange and Hwy. 416 from south of Hwy. 416/417 to Fallowfield Road/County Road 12.
