Globe Theatre stages classic dark comedy ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ in Regina

Globe Theatre’s Arsenic and Old Lace brings a modern twist on the 1940s comedy and the final show before summer break.

A classic dark comedy is returning to the stage in Regina, as the Globe Theatre prepares to open its latest production of “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

The play, written by Joseph Kesselring, will run for an extended engagement at the downtown theatre, bringing a blend of humour and suspense to the audience in time for the summer break.

The story follows Mortimer Brewster as he uncovers a shocking secret about his seemingly sweet elderly aunts, Abby and Martha, which sets off a chain of increasingly chaotic and comedic events.

The situation quickly spirals into chaos, with a cast of eccentric characters that includes a delusional brother who believes he is U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, which adds to the comedic relief of the play.

Director Evalyn Parry said the enduring appeal of the play lies in its structure and energy, particularly when performed live.

“It’s proved to be such a playable script,” Parry said. “The creative ensemble we’ve built around it has been so creative and fun and full of life. There’s just something about making a comedy that is like a bulletproof comedy, and it was such fun to see it in front of a live audience for the first time.”

“Arsenic and Old Lace” has seen numerous adaptations over the decades. Despite being more than 80 years old, the play continues to resonate with audiences through its blend of dark themes and lighthearted execution.

The production opens on Friday night and is extended to June 28, which will be the last play of the summer.
