$59K of contraband seized at Saskatchewan Penitentiary, including meth

Almost $60,000 worth of contraband was seized at Saskatchewan Penitentiary on March 20, according to Correctional Services of Canada (CSC).

In a news release issued Tuesday, CSC stated that staff members of the federal penitentiary found packages containing contraband and other unauthorized items, including methamphetamine, with a total estimated value of $59,000.

“CSC is heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” CSC said in the news release, noting it also works in partnership with police to act in these scenarios.

The organization describes itself as a multi-level security federal institution and stated that it currently uses measures like ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

“CSC has also set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions,” the release read.

“These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions.”
