Environment Canada issues cold warning for Ottawa, windchills near -35

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning-cold for the Ottawa area, cautioning of wind chills near -35 on the weekend.

According to environment Canada, temperatures will reach a high of -17 C during the daytime on Saturday, but the wind chill will make it feel like -29. Overnight, the temperature low will be -24 C with a wind chill near -32.

“Cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia,” Environment Canada says.

A yellow warning denotes hazardous weather that “may cause damage disruption, or health impacts.”

The yellow warning-cold is in effect across most of eastern Ontario.

“Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.” Environment Canada wrote.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

According to Ottawa Public Health, these are the four signs of frostbite:

• “Affected areas will look red, white, bluish-white, grayish-yellow, purplish, brown or ashen, depending on the severity of the condition and the person’s usual skin color.”
• “Affected areas will become painful.”
• “White, waxy-feeling patches will appear. This means skin is dying.”
• “Affected areas will then feel numb.”

If signs of frostbite begin to develop, Environment Canada recommends getting indoors quickly and warming up.

The organization also cautions pet owners to be mindful of the cold temperatures.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” Environment Canada says.

Forecast

On Saturday, the forecast predicts a 40 per cent chance of flurries until approximately 5 p.m.

Sunday will be sunny, but temperatures will still be cool with a daytime high of -14 C and a windchill of -22 in the afternoon.

Windchills near -35 are expected to return Sunday night into Monday morning, Environment Canada says.

On Monday, expect a mix of sun and clouds and a high of -10.
