Residents in Brockville, Ont. are showing their Canadian pride ahead of Canada Day by putting up signs on their lawns. This month, the Brockville Rotary Club has been selling lawn signs for $10 that read “Canada Proud” or “Proudly Canadian.” “We’ve asked Brockvillians to put on their red and white,” says Jacquie Pepper-Journal, who is spearheading the campaign for the Rotary club. “We’re just encouraging everybody to show their pride for Canada.” The signs will be sold leading up to Canada Day at the Brockville Farmers Market every Saturday, or online on the Rotary Club’s website. The signs are made by Ketchum Manufacturing, a local company in Brockville. 80-year-old John Shorey went to buy a sign after he noticed his neighbours had some. “I’m a proud Canadian,” Shorey said. The Brockville resident notes that U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments about making Canada the 51st state have actually brought the country together. “I think if he’s done anything, he’s united Canada to be proud of Canada and to show your patriotism,” he said. Pepper-Journal says the campaign has had so much success early on, that the club has ordered an additional 500 signs to sell before Canada Day, as demand skyrockets. “It’s a domino effect and that’s rippling through the community,” she said. “You see smiles on people’s faces and they’re just happy when they know they can put that sign on their lawn.”
