The University of Regina Rams lost a close one after failing to complete a comeback against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday. The Rams lost 38-31. Rams quarterback Owen Sieben went 22-for-34, throwing for 196 yards and a touchdown. His favourite target of the game was receiver Nicholas Sirleaf, who caught seven passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Huskies quarterback Anton Amundrud threw for 369 yards, two touchdowns and one pick, completing 28 of 37 passes. His top receiver was Dawson Lennea, who caught seven passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Keaton Belsher (75 yards) and Rhett Vavra (74 yards) were the next two leading receivers — both catching six passes each. On the ground, Rams running back Marshall Erichsen had 80 yards on 11 carries and running back Carter Ashman ran for 33 net yards and two touchdowns. It was Erichsen’s first time in the lineup since suffering an injury in late 2025. Regina’s Ty Gorniak scored a field goal on its opening drive, which was answered by a 15-yard Huskies touchdown pass from Amundrud to Lennea. The Rams then orchestrated a 14-play, 77-yard touchdown drive that took nearly seven and a half minutes off the clock in the first quarter. It was capped off by a Carter Ashman one-yard touchdown. In the second quarter, both defences managed to take the ball away from the opposing offence. First, Regina defensive back Chase Murray intercepted a pass from Amundrud in the end zone. Then, U of S defensive back Nathan Casimir forced a fumble on an Ashman run, which was recovered by Porter Hanson for a touchdown. After trading a few more scores, the game was tied 17-17 going into halftime. The Huskies began pulling away in the third quarter, scoring touchdowns on three consecutive possessions while the Rams couldn’t even manage a first down. The scores came from running back Javin Boynton, who scored two one-yard touchdowns, and Lennea, who caught his second of the game on a 37-yard reception. The Rams’ special teams unit gave the team life late in the fourth quarter. The Huskies lined up for a 34-yard field goal attempt, but a high snap resulted in a loose football that was recovered by Murray, who returned it 72 yards for a touchdown. It was the first of Murray’s U Sports career. The Rams went on to force back-to-back two-and-outs, allowing their offence to manufacture an 82-yard touchdown drive. It was Ashman again who punched it in from the one-yard line. The Rams got the ball back with a minute and 15 seconds left in the game with a chance to tie. Sieben completed four passes, advancing the ball inside U of S’ 30-yard line, but the Rams were ultimately unable to convert on third-and-seven. Saskatchewan remains tied for the top spot in the Canada West standings with UBC — with both teams 3-1. Regina is now in third place at 2-2. This matchup was the sixth straight meeting between the two teams that was decided by one possession. Each of the last five was settled by five points or fewer.
