Traffic stop nets drugs, driving charges for wanted northern Ont. man

An overnight traffic stop by Ontario Provincial Police in Blind River early Thursday morning resulted in the arrest of a local man who was already wanted by authorities.

OPP said that officers first observed a vehicle belonging to a wanted individual parked outside a bar on Woodward Avenue at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 22, when police observed the individual leave the establishment and travel northbound in the grey sedan. OPP officers then initiated a traffic stop.

The 48-year-old was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the local OPP detachment.

“During a search, officers located a clear bag containing Percocets, a pipe with drug residue and super glue in an upper jacket pocket,” said OPP in a news release.

As a result, the man was charged with drug possession along with a charge for failing to attend court after having previously appeared.

Novice driver also charged with multiple HTA offences

Further charges were laid related to the operation of the vehicle. Police confirmed the accused was a novice driver with a G1 licence and he was subsequently charged under the Highway Traffic Act with driving unaccompanied by a qualified driver, driving at an unlawful hour and driving with a front seat passenger – all conditions prohibited for a G1 licence holder.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on Feb. 10.
