A capacity crowd packed into Canada Soccer House at North Vancouver’s Shipyards for the men’s team’s first ever knock out match in the World Cup Sunday. With a trip to the round of 16 on the line, thousands of fans dressed in red and white were nervous at the halftime scoreless draw, but cheered loudly when captain Alphonso Davies entered the match against South Africa. It appeared the game was heading to overtime, until Stephen Eustaquio scored in the final minutes of stoppage time to give Canada a 1-0 lead. The crowd erupted, and the excitement kicked into high gear when the final whistle blew, sending team Canada to its first ever round of 16 appearance in the men’s World Cup.
