Speeding stop leads to impaired driving charges in northwestern Ont.

A 46-year-old man from northwestern Ontario faces multiple charges after police allege he refused to comply with a drug-impaired driving investigation.

Ontario Provincial Police said officers stopped a pickup truck for speeding at about 1:37 a.m. on Feb. 12.

Police said investigation revealed the driver was breaching release conditions.

“Police also formed grounds that the driver’s ability to operate the vehicle was impaired by a drug,” said OPP in a news release.

The driver then refused to comply with the standard field sobriety test demand.

As a result, the motorist, a Nipigon resident, has been charged with speeding, failure or refusal to comply with demands and failing to comply with a release order.

In addition to the charges, the accused’s driver licence was suspended for 90 days and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days.

The accused was remanded into custody following a bail hearing.

Public reminder against impaired driving

The provincial police service used the incident to emphasize its commitment to end impaired driving and to ask for the public’s assistance in keeping roads safe.

“OPP remains committed to taking alcohol/drug-impaired drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education,” said police.

“If you suspect that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, it is important to call 911 to report it.”
