A 29-year-old man from Fort Frances has been charged after a resident called 911 to alert police about a possible impaired driver.

On June 20 around 8:30 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police in Fort Frances received a 911 call “from a concerned citizen reporting an impaired driver on Hwy 11/17 leaving Emo.”

“Officers located the vehicle entering Fort Frances and conducted a vehicle stop,” police said in a news release June 29.

Failed the test

“Alcohol was detected and a roadside screening test was demanded. The driver failed the test and was transported to the Fort Frances detachment where additional breath testing was completed.”

The Fort Frances resident has been charged with impaired driving offences, as well as driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available and having care or control of a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor.

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle has been impounded for a week.

The accused was released by police and has a first appearance in Fort Frances court on July 30.

“Impaired driving is a public safety emergency and one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities,” police said.

“If you see an impaired driver, call 911. Your call could be saving a life.”
