Canada Day celebrations are set to take place across Vancouver Island on July 1, with communities offering everything from parades and pancake breakfasts to live music, family activities and fireworks. Whether you’re staying close to home or planning a day trip, events are planned from Greater Victoria to the North Island, with many free to attend. Canada Day marks the anniversary of Confederation on July 1, 1867, when the Dominion of Canada was formed. The statutory holiday is observed across the country and is often marked with community events, cultural programming and fireworks. Here’s a look at some of the biggest Canada Day events happening across Vancouver Island. Greater Victoria Victoria’s Inner Harbour Victoria’s signature Canada Day celebration is set to fill the Inner Harbour with a full day of waterfront activity, local performers, food vendors and a large evening fireworks display. The day begins with food trucks throughout the harbour area, while the busking showcase at Ship Point runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Main stage programming begins at 4:30 p.m. with a welcome from the lək̓ʷəŋən traditional dancers, followed by an evening lineup of live music. The celebration ends with fireworks over the Inner Harbour at 10:20 p.m., billed as the city’s largest Canada Day fireworks display since Canada 150. Huntingdon Hotel and Suites Canada Day Pancake Breakfast The annual Canada Day Pancake Breakfast returns to the Inner Harbour area, offering an early start to the day’s celebrations. Hosted by Huntingdon Hotel and Suites and Pendray Inn and Tea House, the event features free pancakes alongside live Canadian music, local vendors, face painting, children’s activities, a caricature artist and Victorian-era costume photo opportunities. Donations are welcomed, with proceeds supporting Victoria Women’s Transition House. First held in 1996 as a gathering in memory of friends lost during the HIV/AIDS crisis, the event has grown into a community celebration centred on inclusion, baseball, costumes and humour, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators each year. Where: Vic West Park, 95 Bay St., VictoriaTime: Noon to 3 p.m. Gorge Canada Day Picnic The Gorge Waterway will once again host one of Greater Victoria’s largest Canada Day gatherings. The morning begins with a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by the family parade at 9 a.m. The site features busker’s corner, nearly 30 food trucks, an artisan market, children’s activities, art exhibits and voyageur canoe rides running through the day. Live entertainment includes Rick & Rusty at noon, Bagatelle at 1:15 p.m. and The Midnights at 2:30 p.m. Where: Gorge Waterway between Tillicum Road and Admirals RoadTime: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bear Mountain Resort Bear Mountain Resort is set to host a family-focused Canada Day with buffet dining, live music, children’s activities, a bouncy castle and prize giveaways. Event starts at 7 a.m. Where: Bear Mountain Resort, Langford Langford Station Langford Station will feature a full-day community celebration with food, entertainment and family activities. A pancake breakfast runs in the morning, followed by food trucks, crafts, games and roaming performers throughout the day. Main stage entertainment includes Devil Woman from 11 a.m. to noon, Miguelito Valdez from noon to 1 p.m. and Electric Timber Co. from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Additional attractions include Jason Verners’ Magic Show, Sparkle Storm, balloon artists, children’s crafts, dance performances, art classes, a dunk tank fundraiser and more. An opening ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by live music from The Hit List and fireworks at 10:15 p.m. Food trucks will also be available at Eastview Park. Canada Day programming continues July 1 with a pancake breakfast, parade and family fun fair. Runners can take part at their own pace in a relaxed community setting. Where: University of Victoria Ring RoadTime: Starts at 9 a.m. Central Vancouver Island Parksville Parksville’s waterfront Canada Day celebration returns to Community Park with a full schedule of family activities. The Shriners pancake breakfast kicks off the morning ahead of the annual parade. Live entertainment runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the outdoor theatre and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the waterfront gazebo. Additional activities include food trucks, birthday cake, face painting, children’s games, demonstrations, a magician and sandcastle-building activities. E., Parksville Qualicum Beach The Royal Canadian Legion hosts a full day of Canada Day programming featuring a pancake breakfast, cake cutting, family activities, food vendors and live entertainment. The day concludes with a community street dance featuring live music across multiple genres. Where: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76, 180 Veterans Way, Qualicum Beach Nanaimo Nanaimo’s Canada Day celebration returns to Maffeo Sutton Park with free, family-friendly programming throughout the day. Activities include live music, cultural performances, food trucks, children’s games, face painting, bouncy castles and community displays. Entertainment includes Unite Through the Beat, Cosmosaurus Band, Latchkey Kids, Harbour City Magicians and multiple cultural performances. Where: Maffeo Sutton Park, Nanaimo Time: 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Courtenay Courtenay’s Canada Day celebrations are centred at Lewis Park. The day begins with a 5K fun run at 9 a.m., followed by the Canada Day parade along Fifth Street from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A craft market and food trucks also open at 10 a.m. and run throughout the day. Opening ceremonies and cake cutting take place at 11:30 a.m., followed by family activities from noon to 4 p.m., including face painting, bouncy castles, a kids’ bike draw and access to the splash park and outdoor pool. Live music and cultural performances run on the main stage from noon to 5 p.m. Where: Lewis Park, 489 Old Island Hwy., Courtenay Ladysmith Canada Day celebrations in Ladysmith will be at Transfer Beach Park, where the Town of Ladysmith and the Ladysmith Kinsmen Club are hosting a full day of free waterfront programming. Festivities get underway in the morning with a community pancake breakfast, followed by family activities, kids’ programming and food vendors throughout the day. Morning schedule: A pancake and sausage breakfast runs from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the main picnic shelter. Families can then head to the Kids Zone, which opens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features bouncy castles, face painting, field games and community booths spread across the main lawns. Food trucks and the on-site ice cream shack open at 11 a.m., offering lunch, snacks and refreshments throughout the afternoon. North Vancouver Island Campbell River Campbell River’s Canada Day celebrations are split between Willow Point in the morning and downtown in the afternoon and evening. The day begins at Frank James Park with a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., along with live music, a bonsai display, a pipe band performance and a ceremonial cake cutting. Downtown festivities include a marketplace, kids’ activities, helicopter rides and the annual Rotary Parade at 4 p.m. A free concert featuring Trooper begins at 8:45 p.m., followed by fireworks over the waterfront at approximately 10:15 p.m. Where: Frank James Park and Robert V. Ostler Park / Spirit Square, Campbell River Port Hardy Port Hardy’s Canada Day activities at Carrot Park include face painting, bouncy castles, a splash park, games, local vendors and a farmers market. Carrot Park will serve as the hub for Port Hardy’s Canada Day celebrations, with a family-focused afternoon of activities from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on July 1. The day begins with opening ceremonies at noon, followed by free cupcakes and popcorn, along with a “Taste of Canada” sampling station and a watermelon eating contest. Family activities run throughout the afternoon, including face painting from 12:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., bouncy castles and games from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., and access to the splash park for kids to cool off. Visitors can also browse a market and take part in drop-in soccer games in the park. Where: Carrot Park, 7375 Market St., Port Hardy Planning to take transit? Getting to Canada Day celebrations may be easier this year, with BC Transit offering free service and adjusted schedules in several Vancouver Island communities. Victoria Regional Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule, with regular fares in effect. Campbell River Transit will offer free service on all regular routes and operate on a special Canada Day schedule. Comox Valley Transit will run on a Saturday schedule, with free transit and handyDART service. Riders should expect delays and detours around downtown Courtenay during parade and celebration activities. The Regional District of Nanaimo will operate on a Sunday schedule, with a special event shuttle serving Maffeo Sutton Park celebrations.
