More blowing snow and squall warnings in southern Ontario, parking bans extended

Another blast of winter weather is hitting parts of southern Ontario. CTV's Ashley Bacon has the details.

Southwestern Ontario is still feeling the wrath of winter.

Environment Canada is warning of reduced visibility on the roads due to the blowing snow.

They said northwesterly winds of 50 to 70 km/h could make driving more treacherous in open areas.

While lake effect snow could be an issue in some parts of the province, the agency is not expecting significant snowfall in Waterloo Region and areas north of the community.

The winds are expected to die down by Tuesday evening.

Several communities have issued on-street parking bans as a result of the recent snowfall. Waterloo and Kitchener have both extended their snow events until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, while Cambridge parking ban is set to end at noon on Thursday. Vehicles left parked on city streets could be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense.

Wilmot Township also extended their snow event as of 9 p.m. Tuesday.

It’s a different situation for Stratford, Woodstock, London and areas to the west, which continue to be under a snow squall warning.

Environment Canada said they could see an additional 15 to 30 cm of the white stuff between Tuesday and Wednesday, and possibly into Thursday.

“Widespread blowing snow resulting in near zero visibility remains the primary concern [Tuesday] due to northwesterly winds gusting 50 to 70 km/h,” the agency’s alert read. “Winds will ease [Tuesday] evening, however, slow moving snow squalls will continue to bring the potential for significant accumulating snow.”

Environment Canada also warned travel could be hazardous and lead to road closures.

As of 2:30 p.m., the only closures listed on the Ministry of Transportation’s website were to the north, west and south of Woodstock, as well as further north in the Bluewater area.
