New research done by the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) shows strong support for the greenhouse vegetable sector in Kingsville and Chatham-Kent. The survey showed that 91 per cent in Chatham-Kent and 92 per cent in Kingsville agree that the sector is beneficial to the community. 88 per cent also supported continued job creation and investment from the sector. Residents also called for participation within their community, as 92 per cent of respondents support greenhouse and agricultural development. “The greenhouse sector is not just an agricultural sector – it is one if the economic engines that helps sustain local families, businesses, and community services across the region,” said Richard Lee, executive director of OGVG. “As the greenhouse sector continues to expand, we recognize that growth must go hand-in-hand with community dialogue and responsible planning.” In a statement to CTV Windsor, Lee said the survey was focused on Chatham-Kent and Kingsville for a reason. In Kingsville, he said council has expressed opposition to further greenhouse development, which council believes reflects the broader community sentiment. In Chatham-Kent, development charges have reached a significant level, impacting investment decisions. “Residents value the jobs, food production, and economic activity our sector creates, but they also expect thoughtful planning to address local priorities that include infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and community investment,” Lee added. “We share that responsibility.” Among concerns voiced by respondents, 30 per cent said they were worried about environment, pollution, and resource use, 14 per cent said jobs and economic impact, and eight per cent said labour-related issues. 97 per cent expect the sector to continue creating jobs and investing in local programs within communities. “These findings reinforce that support for greenhouse agriculture comes with an expectation of accountability,” Lee said. “We are committed to listening, improving, and working collaboratively with communities to ensure our growth reflects local values.”
